The automobile industry has been around for more that 100 years and it has made amazing progress over that time. Just think how much the automotive industry has played a part in our lives. There have been many millions of vehicles manufactured and sold throughout the world to people like you and me with varying levels of success.

Modern time examples would include cars like the Ford Escort, Toyota Corolla and VW Golf. Earlier we had examples like the Ford Model T and the VW Beetle. However don’t forget there have been some real failures. The Ford Edsel in 1960, the Yugo GV in 1991 and the famous Ralph Nader campaign “unsafe at any speed” Chevrolet Corvair in 1963.

Just like the auto industry, car buyers and drivers have also grown up in their expectations, however two or three of those stand out. Reliability, safety and economy will always be at the top of the list for most of us. Thanks in some way to campaigners like Ralph Nader back in the 60’s and to the vehicle manufacturers we have vehicles today that are reliable, safe and economical.

There are other things we look for in vehicles like style, looks, performance and status but they do tend to come a little lower on the list. We do love to look back in time with eyes coloured with romance and nostalgia but the reality is that most vehicles back then were not made for reliability, safety and economy. Good looks only ever remains on the surface and vehicles today in general are better in almost every measure.
